Vetiver grass with Carlos Márquez

Carlos shows us how he uses vetiver grass to mulch his avocado trees.

Transcript:

This plant is called Vetiver. I planted it. It's a plant that needs very little water. When its established you don't have to water it anymore, it can handle drought really well. The roots go down up to 10 metres, some people say more. You can cut it up to three times per year. So you have biomass which shades the soil in summer, so the irrigation water lasts much longer. Also the plant is rich in silicon, it brings up silicon from deep in the soil and it makes it available to the avocado tree.
