Organic kiwi producer Jagoba Yubero, collecting kiwis from a vine

Our project was born in 2017, when we got the opportunity to start cultivating a farm in Cantabria on land inherited from my grandparents. My partner Clara and I have backgrounds in agronomy studies and we have always been aware of a need to cultivate – especially in a territory like Cantabria, which is predominantly livestock-based and where agriculture is scarce. We were clear in our goal of wanting to grow fruit trees in a place where there is hardly any organic fruit on offer, and decided to begin by planting half a hectare of kiwi.

What makes us different? Compared to other kiwi growers in Cantabria, basically everything! From the beginning, when we didn’t even dig the land, they told us we were crazy. We don’t cut down neighbouring trees, even if they throw shade (and we are even planting more!), we maintain a thick, green ground cover, and even nettles are welcome.

We try to make our place as much as possible a continuation of the forest bordering the farm, and look to support the greatest possible range of biodiversity on our land.
