Fishermen’s Association of Caballa del Sur
Location: Isla Cristina, Gulf of Cadiz
Products: Mackerel and sardines
We are a family fishing association with 14 boats, committed to sustainable and selective fishing. We only fish during the day with top-quality bait and use trawl nets with a mesh size of 60 millimetres (EU standard: 30 millimetres) to accurately select the species and sizes of fish, without damaging the seabed or coral reefs.
Our boats fish close to the coast, no more than 10 kilometres away and at depths of up to 40 metres. Our fleet consists of 14 boats between 12 and 20 metres in length, supported by small rowing boats for transporting bait. We focus on pelagic species that live near the surface or at medium depths.
Despite our sustainable approach, we face challenges such as rising operating costs, competition from large fleets, cheaper imports and industrial fishing that increasingly depletes and damages our oceans. Complex European regulations, especially in the Gulf of Cádiz, and the generational shift in traditional fishing also pose difficulties. In addition, climate change is having an impact, as many species, such as sea bass and squid, are migrating to the colder waters of the North Sea.
Our mackerel and sardines are preserved in Olivovivo organic extra virgin olive oil, guaranteeing a product of the highest quality.
We remain firmly committed to preserving the traditional and artisanal fishing methods of our fathers and minimising our ecological footprint.
