About Us and our Approach
My name is David Ruiz and with my brother Víctor we are the children of José Ruiz España, a farmer with more than 40 years’ experience and the owner of our farm. Together our father contributes his knowledge of farming and we apply ideas and experiences discovered through our work in the agricultural sector; our farm is a meeting place for the wisdom of yesteryear and new innovation.
We have always been closely connected to the agricultural sector and a few years ago opted to move to organic farming, producing healthier food for ourselves, the soil and the environment in which we live. We began with mangoes and papayas, then discovered turmeric; learning about its properties and health benefits, we decided to grow it.
In other countries turmeric is cultivated and used as a food colouring, but it also plays an important role in traditional eastern cultures due to its nutritional qualities; it contains fibre as well as vitamins C, E, K, B1, B2, B3, B6 and B9; it is rich in the minerals manganese and iron and it is a source of potassium, calcium, magnesium, copper and zinc.
For the first couple of years we carried out a series of tests, looking to achieve a level of profitability with what was a new crop for us and for growing in our region. Then in 2017 we commenced our first year of production. This went well as we only harvest on demand, maintaining quality and freshness standards of a very high level.
Thanks to cooperatives like Tierra y Libertad we can ensure that consumers enjoy a product of the highest quality and freshness, which can be on sale only three days after harvest – at a reasonable price for both us and the consumer.
